About

Dr. Padma Sharma Goswami is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics, Cotton University. She graduated from erstwhile Cotton College with Economics Honours (B Sc), securing the First position in First Class from Gauhati University in 1982. She obtained her post-graduate degree in Economics with high performance from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi in 1984, specializing in the area of Econometrics.

She obtained her PhD degree in Economics from the Gauhati University in 1993. In course of her Doctoral study, she carried out comprehensive research in the critical issue pertaining to impact of irrigated agriculture on the food grains production in the Brahmaputra Basin, in the backdrop of its high rate of population growth vis-à-vis national average.

The prime findings of her above seminal research on the development economics of the Brahmaputra basin were published for a wider dissemination in the form of a detailed book chapter in the book titled ‘The Brahmaputra Basin Water Resources’, which was published by SPRINGER (Kluwer Publishers), Germany after conduct of comprehensive international peer review process.

Amongst her research projects, she was actively associated as a co-investigator in an European Commission sponsored 4-year long International Research project, ‘BRAHMATWIN’ on Climate Change, involving 18 leading universities of Europe and Asia.

Till date, she has completed 36 years of teaching both at UG and PG levels at Cotton College / Cotton College State University / Cotton University.

Besides publications of research papers in peer-reviewed journals, she has co-authored a textbook on Economics for Higher Secondary students and also co-authored a book on General Studies for Assam Civil Service exams. She contributed to the “State of the Environment” Report by Govt. Assam, 2004. She was the Convener of JNU-ICSSR-Cotton College Sponsored Outreach Seminar on WTO organized in 2004 at Cotton College. She acted as resource person in examination related activities of Assam Public Service Commission and Gauhati University. She was also invited as subject expert by Staff Selection Commission, Assam Public Service Commission and Gauhati University.

3 research scholars have been awarded M. Phil degrees under her guidance. She is presently guiding 1 research scholar for PhD under Cotton University. 

Recently, she was the coordinator of a two-day International Webinar on “Population, Pandemic and Economy- Local and Global Perspectives: I. India and the World, II. Assam and the North-East.” held on 30-31^st July, 2020.

She is the Chairperson of DRC, Economics, Cotton University.
